Just in time for the summer reading season, Oprah Winfrey announced Friday that she’s bringing back her book club. In a video posted on the website of her OWN network, Winfrey said, “This time, it’s an interactive, online book club for our digital world. That’s why we’re calling it Book Club 2.0.”

Her book club reboot is designed to take advantage of the new technologies available to readers. The e-book editions of her selections will be enhanced especially for the Oprah Book Club, with sharing capacities and notations from Winfrey herself. She also promises to use social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to conduct the discussion about the book.

In the online video [see after the jump], Winfrey said was so enthusiastic about a book that she had to revive her book club in order to share it. That book is Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild,” a memoir about her 1,110-mile hike down the Pacific Crest Trail.

Holding up a hardcover edition of “Wild” to the camera, Winfrey said, “I still believe in books.” She urged readers in her book club to go and purchase the book from a neighborhood bookstore, if that was how they liked to read. Book Club 2.0 is not leaving print books behind.

Founded in 1996, Oprah’s Book Club became a fast track to fame and bestsellerdom. Sometimes she picked new novels, like Janet Fitch’s “White Oleander,” or an older book, like Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye.” After picking Jonathan Franzen’s “The Corrections” in 2001, a controversy erupted over comments he made, and Winfrey suspended the Book Club. When she brought it back, it was less frequent, and initially stuck to classic works. In 2010, in a grand gesture of reconciliation and forgiveness, she selected Franzen’s next novel, “Freedom,” and he appeared on her show. She officially retired the book club later that year.

Details about Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 will be available in the forthcoming issue of “O Magazine,” which hits shelves next week.

Ring of fire solar eclipse

If you live in a band across the southwestern United States, twilight will seem to come early on Sunday afternoon, well before the sun actually sets.

The cause: a rare annular solar eclipse — a ring of sunlight as the new moon, passing between Earth and the sun, blocks most, but not all, of the sun’s disc.

This is not the kind of total eclipse of which you usually see pictures — the moon blocking the sun completely, creating a few moments of near-night in the middle of the day, with only the sun’s ethereal corona visible around the moon’s edges. The sky will darken a bit, but there will still be a blindingly bright ring (an “annulus” in Latin) of sun, and it’s dangerous to look directly at it.

Still, there will be a striking sight to see, if you look at a heavily-filtered image projected onto a screen through binoculars or a small telescope, or protect your eyes with No. 14 arcwelders glass (not something found at most hardware stores).

The ring will be visible Sunday afternoon in a strip that begins on the California-Oregon coast and stretches southeastward across Reno, Nev., the Grand Canyon, and Albuquerque, N.M., and ends at sunset near Lubbock, Texas. In the map we’ve provided, the best viewing is in the yellow band; outside it, people will see a partial eclipse.

The moon’s shadow moves quickly — about 1,200 mph. Some times when the moon’s disc will be most centered over the sun’s are as follows:

 Eureka, Calif.: 6:28 p.m. PDT
 Reno, Nev.: 6:31 p.m. PDT
 Grand Canyon, Ariz.: 6:35 p.m. MST
 Albuquerque: 7:36 p.m. MDT (note time zone change)
 Lubbock: 8:36 p.m. CDT (another time zone change)

Why an annular eclipse instead of a total one? Because the moon, constant in size as it may appear to us, does not move in a perfect circle around Earth. Its orbit is slightly elliptical. On average, it’s about 239,000 miles away, but at its closest it comes within about 225,000 miles of us. At its farthest — as it will be Sunday — it’s a little more than 250,000 miles away. It’s just enough of a difference so that the moon will only cover 88 percent of the sun.

(You may recall the “super moon” of two weeks ago; that night the full moon coincided with the low point of the moon’s orbit, making it look a little more vivid than usual.)

The Interior Department points out that a number ofnational parks — Redwoods and Lassen in California, Zion in Utah, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona, Petroglyph National Monument in New Mexico — will all be in the zone from which the ring will be visible. San Francisco, Sacramento, Yosemite, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City and Denver will all see a partial eclipse — the sun dwindling to a crescent. Even some distant cities, including Chicago, Dallas and Buffalo, will see a fair portion of the sun blocked by the passing moon.

But if you’re in the eclipse path, you really just need a place with a good clear view westward. (Check our weather page for a local forecast, though most of the eclipse zone can expect clear skies, at the moment.) You may want to go to a local observatory or planetarium, where viewing parties are likely.

And if you don’t feel like investing in welder’s glasses, you may be happy — seriously — with a piece of paper, or leafy trees around you. Prick a small hole in the paper and it will act as a tiny lens, projecting a miniscule image of the sun onto the pavement. Likewise, take advantage of the natural pinholes in many leaves. As the eclipse approaches maximum, look down, not up. If you’re lucky, you’ll see hundreds of little eclipse images dancing on the ground beneath your feet.

The laws of orbital mechanics make solar and lunar eclipses fairly common, actually — just not necessarily visible from where you live. If you’re underwhelmed by Sunday’s annular eclipse, there will be a total eclipse on Nov. 13 — but it will only be visible from Australia and the South Pacific.

Chuck D is often quoted as calling hip-hop “the black CNN.” These days, it’s more like TMZ with a beat.

No sooner did Kanye West’s latest single, “Theraflu,” surface late Wednesday night — in which the Chicago-native rapper says, “I admit I fell in love with Kim” — than gossip sites reported Thursday morning that West and reality TV star Kim Kardashian are indeed a couple.

“Kim and Kanye have now just started dating,” a source told People magazine, adding that the two high-profile celebs are keeping things “light” and “seeing where it goes.”

Where it went Wednesday night was to dinner and a movie (“The Hunger Games”) in New York. Thursday morning, TMZ.com published photos of Kardashian “leaving from the building where Kanye lives … wearing the same clothes she rocked to the movies last night.” Kardashian is scheduled to host NBC’s “Today” show Friday morning.

West, 34, has appeared with Kardashian, 31, on “Kourtney & Kim Take New York,” one of several Kardashian family-brand reality TV series.

“We’ve been friends for years,” Kardashian told Ryan Seacrest in a radio interview last month. “We just support each other. That’s what friends do.”

In fact, their relationship goes back at least as far as West’s previous romance.

West split up with former girlfriend Amber Rose in 2010, and Rose later claimed that Kardashian was the cause. But Kardashian last year wed NBA player Kris Humphries — the marriage that infamously lasted 72 days. Meanwhile, just last month, Rose married another rapper, Wiz Khalifa.

The “him” for Kim in that lyric is Humphries, and the last line refers to Jay-Z, West’s current touring partner and co-owner of Humphries’ team, the New Jersey Nets.

“Theraflu,” however, was not the song fans were expecting to hear first this week from Kanye’s camp.

Overnight, West was expected to unveil the song “Mercy,” an official single release from an upcoming mixtape compilation from West’s G.O.O.D. record label, a branch of Island Def Jam. “Mercy” features West collaborating with Pusha T, Big Sean and 2 Chainz. The full album is expected to include G.O.O.D. artists John Legend, Common, Kid Cudi, CyHi da Prynce, Mr. Hudson and others.

But according to Chicago hip-hop blog Fake Shore Drive, “Theraflu” actually was a leak from West’s next solo project. West released the acclaimed “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” album in 2010, and last year saw his collaboration with Jay-Z on “Watch the Throne.” Most online streams of “Theraflu” were yanked by midday Thursday.

West has used the Christian holiday as a G.O.O.D. marketing gimmick before. He began posting tracks from “Fantasy” on Good Friday in 2010.

No release date for the new G.O.O.D. compilation has been set, but producer Mannie Fresh recently told MTV News it was “pretty close” to being finished. “Songs phenomenal, everything,” he said. “It’s an album that’s all over the place, it’s not just one thing. It’s not just that you’re gonna hear some Southern hip-hop or whatever. You’re gonna hear everything.”

Meanwhile, “Theraflu” is produced by Hit-Boy, who also helmed West and Jay-Z’s “Watch the Throne” hit single “N—-s in Paris” (the song they enjoy repeating and repeating as a concert encore).

West and Jay-Z will take their “Throne” tour to Britain this summer, and Jay-Z has hinted that a second “Throne” album may be coming: “You might see a Jay, then Kanye and a ‘Throne’ album next year. We’ve really found our zone.”

President Obama, civil rights leaders and entertainers will dedicate the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, an event that was postponed in late August because of Hurricane Irene.

Gates open at 6 a.m. to the free ceremony at West Potomac Park that’s open to the public, with no tickets required. The memorial near the Jefferson Memorial features two huge stone boulders that give way to a huge stone-carved likeness of King.

The Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation released a list of participants and ceremony details Tuesday. The program begins at 9 a.m. with comments by Julian Bond, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), Marian Wright Edelman, former Ambassador Andrew Young, Rev. Jesse Jackson and others plus members of the King family and journalist Dan Rather. Jennifer Holliday and poet Nikki Giovanni are among the musical and spoken-word performers.

The official dedication at 11 a.m. with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden will be broadcast on large-screen TVs set up in the park. More dignitaries and celebrities — singer Aretha Franklin, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and others — are expected to participate, according to the foundation’s statement.

The memorial, which has been open since mid-August, marks the 395th site added to the National Park Service. The original ceremony was scheduled Aug. 28 on the 48th anniversary of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

Sunday October 16 has been declared as Steve Jobs Day in the iconic Apple chief’s home state of California, on the same day the company holds a memorial service for its late founder.

California Gov Jerry Brown tweeted on Friday evening that Sunday ‘will be Steve Jobs Day in the State of California’ – a salute to come 11 days after the computer genius died aged 56, following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

In issuing the proclamation, the governor wrote that the products that Jobs introduced ‘changed the way the entire world communicates’.

The declaration read: ‘In his life and work, Steve Jobs embodied the California dream. To call him influential would be an understatement.

‘His innovations transformed an industry, and the products he conceived and shepherded to market have changed the way the entire world communicates.

‘Most importantly, his vision helped put powerful technologies, once the exclusive domain of big business and government, in the hands of ordinary consumers.

‘We have only just begun to see the outpouring of creativity and invention that this democratization of technology has made possible.

‘It is fitting that we mark this day to honour his life and achievements as a uniquely Californian visionary. He epitomized the spirit of a state that an eager world watches to see what will come next.’

Apple has invited some of Silicon Valley’s biggest names to a private memorial service for Jobs on the same day, according to a copy of the invitation and several invitees cited by The Wall Street Journal on Friday.

The event will be held at Stanford University’s campus on Sunday evening. It follows a small private funeral held for the Apple co-founder and chief executive last week.

The memorial is expected to be attended by Silicon Valley luminaries and others close to Jobs, said the invitees.

Guests to the invitation-only service were asked to respond to Emerson Collective, a philanthropic organization established by Laurene Powell Jobs, the father-of-four’s wife.

It was on the Stanford campus that Jobs met his future wife, who was studying for a graduate business degree, in 1989 when he gave a talk to students.

And it was also there that in 2005 he delivered his most famous and moving speech, on the lessons he had learned from his first struggles with the disease.

‘Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life,’ he said in a commencement address to students.

‘Because almost everything – all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

‘Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.’

Apple also plans to host an event for Apple employees to celebrate Jobs’ life at its headquarters in Cupertino on October 19.

Jobs’ legacy continued to resonate across the globe on Friday in commercial terms as well as tributes.

Apple shares closed at a record high as the company put its latest device, the iPhone 4S, on sale at retail stores in the U.S. and six other countries.

Long lines formed at various locations, even though the company had already seen strong pre-orders for the device, MarketWatch reported.

Apple said earlier this week that pre-orders for the iPhone 4S topped the one million mark in its first 24 hours – surpassing the record set by its last smartphone product, the iPhone 4.

Millions of Blackberry owners across Europe, the Middle East and Africa have been left without services following a server crash.

Owners of the smartphones were unable to browse the web, send email or instant messages.

The problem appears to have originated in a data centre in Slough which handles Blackberry services for the affected regions.

Blackberry UK said it knew about the problem and was “investigating”.

In a tweet sent around 14:42 BST, the company said: “Some users in EMEA are experiencing issues.”

A subsequent statement said Blackberry was: “working to resolve an issue currently impacting some Blackberry subscribers in Europe Middle East and Africa.”

It apologised for the inconvenience that the ongoing problem was causing its customers.

Earlier on 10 October mobile operators in the UK, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar and other nations pointed the finger at Blackberry owner RIM when replying to tweets from customers complaining about the problems.

Business and consumer

Many corporate customers said they had not lost service, suggesting that the problem was with Blackberry’s BIS consumer systems, rather than its BES enterprise systems.

“Blackberry runs two infrastructures,” explained Simon Butler, a Microsoft Exchange consultant at Sembee.

“The understanding I have is that the BIS service has crashed.

“

“The business side runs on a different set of servers, although enterprise Blackberrys can still use messenger and the consumer services, so they are also affected,” said Mr Butler.

Such a major outage will still come as unwelcome news to Blackberry’s owner RIM, which has been losing market share to smartphone rivals – in particular Apple’s iPhone.

Many corporate clients have switched to the device after Apple made a concerted effort to improve its support for secure business email systems.

“If you have got companies that are shifting their allegiance to other players in the market and you stop being able to provide them that concrete, reliable service, then that’s going to have a detrimental effect,” said Stuart Miles of Pocket-Lint.com.

Online complaints

The first signs of trouble emerged about 11:00 BST but seemed to have escalated with tags about Blackberry and its BBM service trending on Twitter.

The only functioning service on Blackberry seemed to be text messaging, prompting many users to voice their frustration online.

In an early report, The Daily Telegraph quoted one Twitter user as suffering “serious Blackberry outrage”.

Others lamented the loss of the free BBM network saying they did not know what to do without it.
